The first snow

The first snowfall has come, bringing with it a blanket of freshness, of beauty, and quiet. It tells us that the seasons are changing, that we will quickly move from Thanksgiving to Advent, that four weeks leading to Christmas. Even before the turkey leftovers are eaten, the first Advent candle will be lit, Advent wreaths will be woven together, and we will once again begin to look forward to the coming of Christ.
With the smell of wood fires and cooking of food, the falling of snow - especially the kind that does not stick to driveways or sidewalks - awakens memories of Thanksgivings and Christmases past and kindles anticipation of Thanksgivings and Christmases yet to come.
The busyness of the Christmas season will come soon enough. Snow is a reminder to take time now to pause, savor Thanksgiving and let Advent come first.
