Taizé

Taizé, a Protestant, monastic community in Taizé, France, formed after World War II, is dedicated to reconciliation between peoples and to fostering unity within the church. The service is composed of candlelight, icons, short readings, intervals of silence and contemplative chants.

2nd & 4th Wednesdays at 5:45pm (5:30pm optional arrival)

This beautiful story illuminates the Taizé experience:

"It was Ash Wednesday. She watched as a group of the regulars was setting up the chapel for the weekly Taizé service. They draped the bright orange, yellow and burgundy cloths over the communion rail and placed little votive candles on the cloth. They chatted softly among themselves sharing their week and deciding where to put the candles. . . ."

Brother Roger, the former Prior of the Taizé Community, wrote,

"Song is one of the most essential elements of worship. Short chants repeated again and again, give it a contemplative character. Using just a few words, they express a basic reality of faith, quickly grasped by the mind. As the words are sung over many times, this reality gradually penetrates the whole being. And these simple songs then enable us to keep on praying when we are alone, by night and by day, sometimes in the silence of our hearts when we are at work."
